Eco Tourism

Over 300 islands make up the Fiji group, with a total land area of just 18, 272 square kilometres. Of the 300+ islands, only 100 or so are inhabited , and the rest are left as nature reserves.

This is a real heaven for the eco-tourist. Fiji is not just about resorts placed on white beaches, beautiful as they are, or romantic escapes to 5 star luxury, tempting as they may be! Fiji is also about discovering an unspoiled, unique environment of extreme beauty and tranquillity. This is an environment that, because of its isolation in the South Pacific, has escaped many of the infrastructures of modern day living. Fiji presents the eco-tourist with a rare chance of unique discovery.

In Fiji it is possible to discover virgin grasslands, and tropical rainforests unscarred by any development - even tourism infrastructure. Life has changed so little over the centuries you can wander through a colonial town that has been unchanged for 100 years. You can marvel at the exotic customs of the Fijian, Indian, Chinese and other cultures that have made Fiji their home.

The Fijians themselves are keen to show travellers their unique natural and cultural homeland and of utmost importance to them is ensuring the conservation and preservation of such a treasured landscape and seascape. As a traveller you can take part in an active conservation and preservation programme with a local team, stay with a family in a village and really make a significant personal impact in an important environmental project.

There are a number of ways to be a part of this unique ecosystem. Fiji has many resorts that are themselves dedicated to eco-tourism, such as Jean Michel Cousteau's Fiji Resort, a world renowned scuba diving operation where you can visit some of the best soft coral in the world, or Tamarillo Tropical Expeditions who guide sea kayaking journeys through the unspoiled islands of Kadavu. For the more adventurous a jet ski safari at Pacific Harbour provides an eco adrenalin hit!

Take an off the beaten track adventure, dive, surf, canoe or trek your way through Fiji's marvellous unspoilt landscapes. Fiji is truly an amazing place - and for the eco tourist a place that is yet to be truly discovered.
