Things to do at Taveuni

Much of Taveuni’s coastline is rugged and set against some of Fiji’s highest peaks. Des Voeux Peak reaches up 1195m and the cloud shrouded Mt Uluiqalau, at 1241m, is country’s second highest summit, offering some of the best views in Fiji and making Taveuni a great hiking destination.  Covered in coconut trees, Taveuni is known for being the Garden Island of Fiji because of the abundance of its flora.  About 60 percent of the land is tropical rainforest, and the volcanic soil makes Taveuni one of Fiji’s most fertile areas. While the northeast of Taveuni is fringed by reefs, the southwest has deep water close to shore.  Taveuni, free from poisonous snakes and spiders, is a bird watchers dream as well.

With Rainbow Reef and Vuna Reef  just a short boat ride away,  Paradise Taveuni offers you some of  the best diving in the world. Fiji, known for being the soft coral capital of the world, will give you some of the most memorable dives of your life exploring astounding soft corals and diverse marine life, all on the world-famous Somosomo Strait.  With over 40 sites on hand, Paradise offers divers like The Great White Wall, Orgasm, The Zoo and many more dive sites that you will reminisce on for the rest of your life.

The resort offers a number of activities to our guests on a daily basis.  If you are looking at doing something besides diving and relaxing, the surrounding area is full of things to do :

SOUTHERN BLOW HOLE TOUR AND GUIDED HIKE – The only one on Taveuni, this unique blowhole has been created by the forces of nature combining volcanic molten lava and the cooling powers of the ocean. Water on the incoming tide can shoot up to 50 metres into the sky.

SHOPPING TRIP : The resort’s driver will escort you through the main shopping area of Naqara (pr: Nung-gah-rah) which features handicraft shops, fruit and vegetable markets and local shops offering a variety of affordable items. Have fun haggling with the local stall and shop owners.  Remember your Fijian dollars!

CULTURAL ADVENTURE AND CHURCH SERVICE : The Fijian people are very religious and there are many denominations on the small island of Taveuni including Methodist, Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, Church of the Latter-day Saints as well as Hindu and Moslem Temples. The Holy Cross Church and Wairiki Catholic Mission was built in 1907 and overlook the school playing field and Somosomo Strait. An important canoe battle even took place on the beach in the mid-17th Century. At the time the Tongan Chief had gained much control of the rest of Fiji and Taveuni was in his sights. A great battle ensued, with many casualties. The Taveuni warriors from the southern most village of Taveuni called Navkawau, fought bravely and fearlessly to turn back the invading Tongans, who numbered in the thousands. The story goes that the slain enemies were cooked in the lovo (pit oven) and then eaten with uru (breadfruit). The Taveuni locals then built the Holy Cross Church to thank the French Missionaries who had helped the local warriors with their battle strategy against the Tongan Chief. The Mass each Sunday is in Fijian and the fantastic choir singing is certainly something to experience. The stained glass within the Church is said to have been imported from France, there is also a painting of the famous battle within the presbytery.

GUIDED DAY TOUR TO BOUMA WATERFALLS : Take a guided, scenic coastal drive to the beautiful Bouma Waterfalls which have been featured in movies such as Blue Lagoon and most recently on The Bachelorette.  Upon arrival, an easy 10 minute walk takes you to the first and most famous waterfall of Fiji. You may choose to hike to the picturesque second and third falls, or simply enjoy the cool waters and serenity of the first falls. On the return trip back to the resort you’ll stop at the Naqare main shopping area, the 180 Meridian Line that passes through Taveuni and visit the sign erected to mark the spot where today and tomorrow meet (here couples can take a photo of themselves kissing for 2 days!).  Visit the Meridian Store to buy affordable and good quality material, snacks or ice cream! The Holy Cross church and Wairiki Catholic Mission was built in 1907 and overlooks the playing field and Somosomo Strait. The presbytery holds a painting of the famous battle won by our brave and fearless Southern Taveuni Warriors. The Waitavala Waterslide is a natural rock waterslide made from the erosion of water over rocks making the stones smooth to slide down.

GUIDED VILLAGE TOUR & CULTURAL EXPERIENCE : Visit first-hand day-to-day life in a Fijian Village. Duivosavosa (Do-ee-voh-sah voh-sah) Village is located 30 minutes drive north of the resort. This experience offers you a rare and genuine insight on the day to day happenings in a Fijian Village. On arrival you will be greeted and welcomed by the Village Chief (or one of his brothers if he is busy) who proudly escorts you through the village and demonstrates the various tasks they do daily. See the many uses of a coconut tree, traditional craft making, the fine art of fan, basket and mat weaving, fire making, earth oven or ‘Lovo’ demonstration and taste traditional Fijian food. Also witness the making of and try the traditional Fijian drink yaqona (yong-goner) ‘kava’ from root to drink. After the Kava Ceremony you will be invited to Taralala (dance) with the villagers. After the village tour you can choose to visit the nearby shopping area where you can purchase reasonably priced handicrafts.
