qamea resort fiji travel review

Resort Review : Qamea Resort and Spa Fiji

The next resort visited by our travel specialist, Jules Stabback on her recent Fiji tour, was Qamea Resort and Spa. We hope you enjoy her travel review below of this luxury, adults-only destination.

With a sad but heartfelt farewell, Jules left Matangi Private Island Resort taking the short boat ride to beautiful Qamea Resort and Spa.

When guests arrive at Qamea they don’t get a loud, raucous welcome song.  There’s a reason behind this.  Many guests arrive from long flights – Qamea welcomes a lot of Americans looking for off the beaten track luxury – so the resort has made the conscious decision to make your arrival as peaceful as possible.   This means a quiet Bula from the wonderful resort managers, a cold drink, icy cold towel and comfy seat in the beautiful welcome bure.

Serenity and soul is how I would sum up Qamea.

From the moment you arrive, the serenity is immediately upon you. This is an intimate, adults-only resort with no more than 34 adult guests accommodated on the island at any one time.

Set among 100 acres of lush, tropical, landscaped gardens with a jungle and jagged volcanic mountain backdrop, combined with over a kilometre of white sand beach, the island epitomises tropical perfection.

All bures are located along the beachfront.

All bures at Qamea are located along the beachfront – some with direct beach access, others with beautiful grassy areas in front.  Day beds on your decking mean you can watch the sun set every evening – or just spend the day there reading your book, swinging in the hammock and watching the day go by.

Your bure is traditional yet has all the luxury you would expect – air conditioning, outdoor stone shower, exquisite toiletries and a separate living area.   Plus, wait for it – heated towel rails.   Sounds odd in the tropics but when you have been diving all day and just need that extra bit of warmth this is a real treat.  And even when you hadn’t been diving all day it was still a lovely unexpected nicety.

The private and secluded Beach House

Privacy is important and none of the bures impact each other.

Privacy is very important at Qamea and none of the bures impact on each other – but if you really want seclusion, book the Royal Beach House.  There are three Royal Beach Houses and they are set at the very end of the resort.  With larger decks that extend down to the beachfront,  your own plunge pool, a separate living and lounge area, indoor and outdoor rock shower,  these beach houses are really special.

You may not want to leave your beach house, but you must eat (of course you can always call for a private, in-room dining experience).  And, you must visit the award-winning Jungle Spa.

travel review qamea resort jungle spa

The award-winning Jungle Spa

The Jungle Spa is accessed across a bridge – and literally a walk up into the jungle.   With separate treatment rooms placed within the lush greenery, the Jungle Spa won the World Luxury Spa Awards:  Best Luxury Destination Spa.

There is no pre-recorded bird song in this wonderful space – the native jungle birds chatter away as you fade away into a state of bliss.

The Qamea spa is the only one in Fiji that uses Guinot products – but with a Fijian approach.  For the ultimate in luxury, you can book a Qamea Night of Decadence in the Jungle Spa.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you’re escorted from your bure by Fijian warriors, you’ll enjoy champagne in the spa before your treatments then return to your villa for a romantic candlelit dinner.

travel review qamea resort diving

Qamea is a diver’s paradise.

Just like its neighbouring property, Matangi Private Island Resort, Qamea is an ideal spot for diving and, in the right season, surfing.  Amazing surf breaks are only short boat ride away and, between November and April, you may have the entire break to yourself (or be one of only a handful of surfers).   This is quite unlike other popular surf spots in the Mamanuca region.

It is not possible to count the number of dive sites at Qamea – even on two hands!

Qamea is a diver’s paradise.  There are dive spots for incoming and outgoing tides, those that are perfect with no current, or with current.   Imagine descending amongst a school of chevron barracudas, being engulfed in large school of fusiliers and jacks, or sitting among large colonies of blue tipped anemones, diving down a vertical wall and seeing white tip reef sharks and turtles.

qamea resort fiji things to do

Lavena Nature Walk

The Qamea orange dove

If you would rather stay on dry land, then Qamea’s location is perfect for exploring.   Take a jungle hike for spectacular bird watching where you’ll hopefully spot the Qamea orange dove. Or perhaps a private beach picnic is more to your liking?

Explore further afield perhaps and visit the Bouma National Park and the amazing waterfalls. Hike to the top and swim in the icy cold river.

Stroll through the Lavena Nature Walk where you will cross white sandy beaches and rivers before passing through villages and then ascending into the river valley and waterfall.  If you’re feeling super brave, finish up with a slide down the water chute or jump into the rook pools from the high walls.

You will certainly need sustenance after such busy days and the food at Qamea won’t disappoint.

All food at Qamea is sourced locally. Freshly caught seafood is, of course, a speciality and you can expect to enjoy daily changing menus depending on what’s come in off the boat or been picked fresh from the gardens.  Dining can be either in the main bure, Bure Kalau, in your room or even private dining on the beach.  We enjoyed dinner in the beachside bure and it was spectacular!

qamea resort fiji food

Fresh, locally sourced food.

Good food, great wine, lovely company and a beautiful bure to wander back to – it really was a fitting end to a wonderful day.

If you book your stay at Qamea before March 31st you will be able to experience Qamea with our generous Stay Pay specials with lots of complimentary inclusions (scroll down for details).  I recommend indulging in more than just the Stay 4 Pay 3 travel special.  Make the most of our Stay 7 Pay 5.  This is such a special place and, trust me, you’ll wish you could stay longer.
