Surfing holidays in Fiji
Warm tropical water, legendary reef breaks and year-round waves make Fiji one of the world’s great surfing destinations.
Fiji is best known for powerful breaks such as Cloudbreak, Restaurants and Frigates, but it also offers more forgiving waves for intermediate surfers and several mainland locations where beginners can learn. Choosing the right region and resort is important because many of Fiji’s best surf breaks are offshore and can only be reached by boat.

When is the best time to surf in Fiji?
Fiji has surf throughout the year, although wave size, swell direction and wind conditions vary by season.
April to November generally brings the most consistent south and south-west ground swells. This is the prime season for experienced surfers chasing Fiji’s famous reef breaks. The trade winds can strengthen later in the day, so early surf trips are often preferred.
November to March usually brings warmer weather, lighter winds and shorter-duration tropical swells. Conditions can be smaller and more approachable, but Fiji’s reef breaks remain powerful and conditions can change quickly.
Surfing the Mamanuca Islands
The southern Mamanuca Islands are the centre of Fiji’s surfing scene. This region is home to Cloudbreak, Restaurants, Namotu Lefts, Wilkes Passage, Swimming Pools and several other renowned reef breaks.
Most breaks require a boat, and the closest resort isn’t always the most practical choice. A good surfing base needs reliable access to an experienced surf-boat operator, knowledge of tides and conditions, and the ability to reach the most suitable break on the day.
Cloudbreak
Fiji’s most famous wave is a powerful left-hand reef break on the outer reef near Tavarua and Namotu Islands. It can produce long walls and heavy barrels and hold significant swell. Cloudbreak should only be attempted by suitably experienced surfers when conditions are powerful.
Restaurants
Restaurants is a fast, hollow left-hander breaking close to Tavarua Island. It needs more swell than Cloudbreak and can become extremely shallow and demanding, particularly at lower tide.
Namotu Lefts
A long and playful left-hander that can be more forgiving than Cloudbreak when conditions are moderate. It can still become powerful on larger swells and should be approached with an experienced guide.
Wilkes Passage
A fast right-hand reef break that performs well with west to south-west swell. Smaller days can offer long, workable walls, while larger conditions produce considerable speed and power.
Swimming Pools
A clear-water right-hander near Namotu Island. It’s often one of the more approachable Mamanuca reef breaks when small, although it remains a reef wave and conditions determine suitability.
Desperations
A consistent reef break that can pick up swell when other locations are quiet. It offers both left and right-hand waves, with the required experience level changing considerably with the conditions.

Frigates and the Pacific Harbour region
Frigates Passage is a renowned offshore left-hand reef break near Beqa. It’s known for long rides, consistency and considerable power when the swell increases. Its exposed offshore location means reaching it requires an experienced boat operator and suitable marine conditions.
Frigates can be enjoyable for competent surfers when small, but larger conditions are firmly for advanced and expert surfers. Travel time varies according to the boat’s departure point and conditions, so it shouldn’t be described as a simple 20-minute transfer from Pacific Harbour.
Where to stay
Nanuku Resort
A luxury resort near Pacific Harbour overlooking Beqa Lagoon. Nanuku is ideal for couples and families wanting an elevated resort experience with access to the wider region’s marine adventures. Any specialist surf charter must be requested and confirmed in advance.
Dedicated surf resorts
Specialist properties between the Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour operate guided surf boats to Frigates and other local breaks. These are generally better suited to travellers whose main holiday priority is surfing rather than a traditional full-service Fiji resort experience.

Beginner surfing on Fiji’s Coral Coast
Fiji’s mainland provides some of the most accessible options for learning to surf. Natadola Beach and the Sigatoka area can offer beach or sand-bottom waves when conditions are suitable, avoiding the advanced outer-reef environment associated with Cloudbreak and Frigates.

Natadola Beach
Natadola can produce an approachable inside wave for lessons and improving surfers when the swell and tide are suitable. The outer break is more demanding and should not be confused with the beginner area.
Other Coral Coast reef breaks include Hideaways and Naviti. These may be close to shore, but shallow reef, tides and stronger swells can quickly make them unsuitable for inexperienced surfers.
